Got the Summer Time Sweats?

The Heat is on!!

We all wait in anticipation for the summer heat to arrive and when it finally does, we can’t seem to get cool enough. We all know the feeling of waking up in the middle of the night roasting. You kick off the blankets, yet nothing seems to cool you down?? We all blame it on the temperature outside and in our houses but maybe the real reason is something else?

The kind of bedding you choose based on the type of sleeper you are makes a world of difference!

Sheets

The bedding sold in some retail stores can be made of polyester. Polyester sheeting is soft to the touch and you may think you’ll like sleeping in it until you wake up looking like you just jumped into a pool. Polyester is a man-made fibre and does not have the breathability like natural fibers! This means that the moisture and heat of your body essentially stays around you while you sleep.

If you’re a cotton lover, cotton is a natural fiber and is very breathable! If you’re a hot sleeper we would recommend a percale weave vs a sateen. Percale sheeting is crisp and cool to the touch. This is the types of sheeting that will always feel cool when you move around!

If the cotton sheets are still keeping you too warm, you still have options!

Cashmere is one of the finest linens around! It’s soft, wrinkle resistant and has the ability to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer!

Micro Modal is a natural material made from Italian wood fibers! This type of sheeting has a luxurious, soft, silky feel and is light and breathable for the sleeper. It’s as soft as silk and even cooler than cotton!

Linen is a natural fiber and very breathable. It has the ability to absorb 20% of its weight in moisture which means you will stay uniquely cool during the hotter summer months!

Silk is the coolest fabric anyone can buy! Its is lightweight, natural and has the ability to absorb 1/3 of its weight in moisture leaving you cool and dry!

Duvets

This is the first thing people pull off the bed in the summer. But doesn’t have to be like that! A quality duvet will have the ability to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer!

Why? Real down duvets are natural and breathable. They allow water vapour to pass through, keeping it away from your body and keeping you cool. You are also able to get a range of different fills in a duvet, from a winter weight (average sleepers in cold bedrooms) to summer weight (warm sleepers in warm rooms).

The quality of ticking (fabric around the duvet) is also very important in keeping you cool! This fabric must be just as breathable and lightweight as the down. Lower quality ticking will feel heavy and eventually the down, down alternative or feathers to start leaking out and will irritate the sleeper!

The down alternatives you can buy at some big box stores are not made of natural materials and in return, are not as light and breathable. This alone could be the reason for your sleepless nights!

Mattress Protector

Last but not least… mattress protectors! The way mattresses are being manufactured are only making them less breathable and hotter to sleep on. Avoid the polyester protectors and get yourself a wool mattress protector. It will not only protect your mattress in the long run but the wool will absorb moisture and keep you cool while you sleep!

Come see us at Bella Casa Design Centre and we can help you get rid of your summer time sweats so you can get that perfect sleep!!
