How to Decorate the Perfect Tree

With Halloween out of the way, we are entering the most exciting time of the year. . . .Christmas!!

With many things to think about, shopping, entertaining, and eating, the task of decorating can seem overwhelming. To help keep it simple, here are a few tips to make your tree trimming easy and fun. . . .you might even be able to enlist the whole family for a tree trimming party.

Start with the obvious, a tree! Select a tree that works with your space; do you need tall and skinny, or short and full?! Look for one that is pre-lit as this will save hours of frustration when your lights burnout or cords get all tangled up. There are many available trees to purchase besides the traditional evergreen whether it be live or artificial. Even a stick tree can be easy to put together as well and can give you that modern and contemporary look. I always like to use the white lights as they are the easiest to work with when it comes adding decorations and establishing a theme.

Once you have selected the perfect tree, think colour and theme next. What type of look would you like to portray?! Remember you don’t have to stick with the traditional reds and greens, now days you can find virtually any colour of ornament! Whether it be teals and blacks/silvers or brightly coloured fuchsias, purples and lime greens, you can have fun with your colour theme and still establish a warm Christmas feel.

When buying your ordiments, purchase at least 3 different sizes and colours of round bulbs from 3” to 8”. Depending on your tree size, you want to keep the bulbs in proportion to the room and tree. Next, select your theme. For example, if you are wanting a nature or sporting theme, you can find feathered bird ornaments you can establish a nature theme, or select skates for the sport theme. Keep in mind all colours should coordinate - If you are doing a burgundy and pink tree, select a colour of bird in perhaps in the silver tone. Metal coloured ornaments adds depth and pop. Gone are the days where we only had silver and gold to select from! Now there is a full spectrum on metallic colours, ranging from silver/golds to full colours.

Select a trim to wrap around the tree and don’t be shy. Start from the top and of the tree and work your way to the bottom leaving approximately 6 to 8 inches apart. Next start placing your larger ornaments in a triangular pattern throughout the tree. Next work from the largest size to the smallest ornament. Once you have hang the ornaments and garland, start trimming the tree with your accent pieces, which can range from large picks of branches to sparkly foil feathers.

Almost done!! Finish off by placing your tree topper… and vola, your tree is complete and looks spectacular!

Now you are ready for your guests to arrive!!

Stay tuned while we talk about decorating other areas of your home by adding small decorated areas to create a lot of impact.
